Fall/Autumn and Halloween Inferencing Game | What’s in the Box Speech Therapy

Make autumn and Halloween language sessions more engaging with this interactive Guess What’s in the Box activity!

Students listen to three clues and use the information provided to guess the hidden autumn, camping or Halloween item. The clues become progressively more specific, allowing students to make a guess after each clue and revise their answer as they receive more information.

With 50 vocabulary targets included, the activity can easily be divided across two or more sessions. Use the autumn items throughout the season, then use the Halloween items separately during October.

This activity targets inferencing, seasonal vocabulary, listening comprehension, identifying key details, semantic associations, word retrieval and verbal reasoning. It can also be used to encourage describing by asking students to explain how they reached their answer or create their own clues.

What is included:

• 50 autumn, camping and Halloween vocabulary items

• Three progressively revealing clues for every item

• 150 clues in total

• A picture reveal for each answer

• A mixture of autumn and Halloween vocabulary. Vocabulary includes pumpkins, apples, woodland animals, farm items, autumn clothing, camping equipment, Halloween characters, seasonal foods and more.

How to use:

Read or display one clue at a time and encourage students to guess what is hidden inside the box. Students can guess after every clue or wait until all three clues have been provided. After revealing the answer, ask students to explain which clue helped them, describe the item, name its category or use the word in a sentence.

This resource is ideal for:

• Speech and language therapy

• Special education

• Individual or small group sessions

• Classroom language activities

• Autumn and Halloween centres

• Listening comprehension practice

• Mixed language groups

Students do not need to read independently, as all clues can be read aloud by an adult.
